A Lady's Pub Guide to London

The Queen Adelaide

The Queen Adelaide

Pub number 4 on the Shepherd's Bush pub tour brought us to the Queen Adelaide. The one in Shepherd’s Bush - not to be confused with the pub on Putney Bridge road - gives a nice vibe as you approach it on the corner of Uxbridge Road and Adelaide Grove. Similar to the all the pubs in the neighbourhood, there are restrictions on QPR game days, so just be aware of the match schedule if you are wandering through the area!

Give this beer a try: You can go with the Chelsea Blonde for something a little bit different.

The beer. The beer here is pretty generic. I went with a Hop House lager, since I was feeling fairly uninspired with the rest of the beer selection. They are the only pub on the Shepherd's Bush crawl that carried an Unfiltered Camden Hells... personally, I'm not a huge fan of unfiltered lager, so didn't go with it, but if it's something that you want to try, I'd suggest giving it a taste. I'll admit, I found myself wondering what pint to drink because they didn't also carry a regular Camden Hells, thus my Hop House Lager order. Anna had a Chelsea Blonde and really enjoyed it - if you are into white beers, you'll definitely want to give this one a go!

The ambiance. The pub is open and airy, and around 15:30/16:00 when we went there, there were a lot of people sitting outside in the sun having a lunch and a pint. There were equal amounts of families and dogs, as well as groups of people just catching up and enjoying an afternoon pint in the sun. The outdoor seating area is on the street side, but there are high hedges that keep you fairly sheltered from the noise and the business of the street and traffic. Inside, the high ceilings are high - typical of a gastropub, with standard furnishings and the environment of a nice pub.

The food. We made the decision to order food here - the menu looked very promising, but 2 of the starters we wanted to order were unavailable! Not promising for mid afternoon on a Saturday for the potential dinner crowd that would be coming in a few hours' time. I would highly recommend the crab cakes with samphire if you do order food, because it was delicious.

Any extras.  This was a very dog-friendly pub, with at least 3 dogs coming and going as we were there for about one hour.

The wrap up. This is a nice and chilled out place to go for an afternoon lunch. As mentioned above there were plenty of families and pets, and I'd definitely go back for a lunch with friends for an afternoon with nice food. I don't know that I would necessarily walk this far down Uxbridge road for a night out, but definitely might wander to the Shepherd's Bush Market, and have a lunch here afterwards.

Average price per pint:  £5.10
